- 1 large onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt to taste
- Black pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Pour in crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes (if using).
- Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat to low.
- Cover and cook for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. For a richer flavor, cook for 1 hour or more.
- Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
Notes
- For a smoother sauce, blend with an immersion blender or in batches in a regular blender after cooking.
- Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
- Add a pinch of sugar if your tomatoes are too acidic.
