Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more, until fragrant.
  4. Pour in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for at least 30 minutes, or up to 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  8. Serve hot with your favorite pasta or use in other recipes.

Notes

  • For a smoother sauce, you can blend it with an immersion blender or in a regular blender (carefully) after simmering.
