Description

These homemade Cinnabon-style cinnamon rolls are soft, gooey, and packed with cinnamon sugar, topped with a rich cream cheese frosting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk (105-115°F)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 ½ tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 tablespoons milk or cream

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and granulated sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in the egg, melted butter, and salt. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. While the dough rises, prepare the filling: In a small bowl, combine softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until well mixed.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it into a 12×18-inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface.
  7. Spread the cinnamon filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border at one end.
  8. Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Pinch the seam to seal.
  9. Cut the log into 12 equal slices, about 1.5 inches thick.
  10. Place the rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, leaving some space between them.
  11. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and let the rolls rise again in a warm place for 30-45 minutes, or until puffy.
  12. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  13. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  14. While the rolls bake, prepare the frosting: In a medium bowl, beat cream cheese and softened butter until creamy.
  15. Add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk/cream. Beat until smooth and fluffy.
  16. Once the rolls are out of the oven, let them cool for a few minutes. Spread the cream cheese frosting generously over the warm rolls.
  17. Serve warm and enjoy.

Notes

  • Ensure your yeast is active for proper rising.
  • Do not overbake the rolls to keep them soft and gooey.
  • Store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat in the microwave for a few seconds before serving.
